March Madness is an elimination basketball tournament that is played by sixty-eight (68) college teams from the USA. These 68 teams are comprised of the 32 automatic qualifiers who win their respective conference tournaments and 36 'at-large bids' selected by a committee. I will explain the difference below.

Welcome to March Mammal Madness! This library guide is your official location for MMM tournament info and resources to help you fill out your bracket. March Mammal Madness originated at Mammals Suck...Milk, Dr. Katie Hinde's blog, where she founded MMM in 2013. Each year, the tournament has become more popular, elaborate, educational, and fun.

  • Arguably the most-popular tournament bracket are the ones that come out for the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament, otherwise known as March Madness. This three-week tournament is a whirlwind of dozens of American college and university basketball teams competing for the championship.
  • How Do Madness Squares Work? If you are familiar with Super Bowl Squares, the core concept is the same for March Madness. A 10x10 grid of boxes is setup and each row and column are assigned a number from 0 to 9.

Inspired by (but in no way affiliated with or representing) the NCAA College Basketball March Madness Championship Tournament, March Mammal Madness is an annual tournament of *simulated* combat competition among animals. Scientific literature is cited to substantiate likely outcomes as a probabilistic function of the two species' attributes within the battle environment. Attributes considered in calculating battle outcome include temperament, weaponry, armor, body mass, running speed, fight style, physiology, and motivation.
Through the scientific information embedded in the bout descriptions, participants are educated about inter-species interactions, the importance of ecological context, how natural selection has shaped adaptations, and conservation management of endangered species.

For a comprehensive overview of the design, public engagement, and reach of the tournament, view our new article in the journal eLife! March Mammal Madness and the power of narrative in science outreach. eLife 2021;10:e65066doi: 10.7554/eLife.65066

Have your community start their own March Madness Bracket! Here's all the how-to's and some great resources to help set-up the pool.

For a quick tutorial, March Madness is the single-elimination NCAA Division 1 college basketball tournaments performed each spring by 64 teams. It starts with this time-table, of Selection Sunday, March 15, 2015, and has a posted run date thru Monday, April 6, 2015. Generally, the tournament is played over 3 weeks starting after the middle of March. Each team has their own rank, and then is separated into 4 region brackets of 16 teams each. Within each region bracket, the top (1) and bottom (16) teams play, and so forth, with the winners of each playing the next winner of the previous game. Each bracket of playoffs has corresponding names like Sweet Sixteen, Final Four, and so on.

The point of a March Madness Pool or Bracket is to win by predicting the winners of each of the games, and the person with the highest number of correct predictions wins the pool prize! To this date, NOBODY has ever filled out a Perfect Bracket, but are addicted to keep trying. Did you know Warren Buffet is even offering $1 BILLION for anyone the completely predicts the whole Bracket?!!

Warning!! This will be consuming and distracting from work, family, and health! But it wouldn't be if it wasn't such great fun! Plus, although the bracket should be available to all residents, it is a nice event that caters more to your male residents exclusively, since so much of our community plans center around the family and/or female residents.

Here's how-to set up your own Community March Madness Pool or Bracket, and some great party ideas for Selection Sunday, or even the wrap up of the tournament. This is a great site, by SportsFan.com, that sets up a March Madness Pool for you in as little as 15 minutes, and can run entirely online if you choose. Some other great Hosts for setting up an online pool comes from About.com , and are generally free.

Make A Bracket March Madness

Consider creating a large board with the drawn out Brackets that can be updated each time a team wins, and moves onto the next round. Colorful is best, but this can be as simple as a dry-erase board, or large white paper with black markings. Use this blank bracket, completed by http://ditmasparkcorner.com/blog/sports/join-the-madness-2, to print out for your residents to get started in predicting the roster this year, and use the back to detail instructions for your Community Pool online.

Print out paper instructions on how-to login to the chosen site that you'd like to host your Pool thru, explaining what your Pool's name is, and the login information. This will save you from having to make dozens of copies of the bracket results every game with the updated information for each participant, and expecting the residents to come in that often for updated sheets. Do it online!!

Pinterest.com is your best resource for Party decoration and food ideas! Search 'March Madness Party' for the neatest clichés, like cheeseball 'basketballs' to use for a hoop toss game. Simple AND awesome are totally possibly thru this amazing site! Here's a link to a whole board of ideas: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/194428908885372232/

I suggest having a party with some food and beverages at the end of the tournament for everyone participating, giving you the opportunity to hand out the Pool Grand Prize and any runners-up prizes you'd like to include in front of everyone, further causing your residents to feel closer to each other, you, and the community, which helps you when re-leasing to those who now feel invested. Don't we all want to be part of the Party who has fun?!
