The Beginning for Thomas “Durrrr” Dwan

It all began for Tom Dwan at the tender and puerile age of 17. Ironically too young to even gamble legitimately; Durrrr didn’t let his umbilical cord get in the way. Havn’t learned to play poker for the first time at college, Dwan got to grips with play-money tables on the online poker site Paradise Poker aged just 17. After reading a plentitude of strategy and gaining experience as a student poker player, it wasn’t long before Dwan moved to micro cash tables and low-stakes Sng games. At 18, after only two months from his first and only $50 deposit on Paradise Poker, Dwan had accumulated a staggering $15,000.

Still playing as a student, Thomas “Durrrr” Dwan was playing $40/80 limits and went on a decent run to win around $35k. However like all good poker players, the variance kicked in and Dwan suffered some sizable poker downswings in his game. With some unfortunate luck and bad beats, Dwan managed to lose a $20k of his bankroll, and at this point Dwan decided to diversify and turn to No-Limit Texas Holdem. Although Dwan’s losses forced him to revert back to the $5/10 No Limit Holdem stakes, Dwan still enjoyed the comfort of a $40k bankroll. After Dwan regained his bankroll and form in a matter of weeks, he increased his blinds and moved onto higher level tables. Starting to get attention at this point in the online poker world, Dwan said to reporters “I run good, what can I say”?

At the age of around 19, when asked about his poker playing habits in an interview by Bluff Magazine, his housemate David Benefield and Chris Vaughn told reporters of student poker player Thomas “Durrrr” Dwan: “a quick “sesh” for Thomas Dwan involved him opening up six tables with the smallest limit being played was $100/$200 NL Hold’em”. In under an hour, Chris Vaughn had witnessed Tom “Durrrr” Dwan make over $200,000. Dwan’s reputation by now had supposedly become so strong that it was self-admittedly hard for the young professional student poker player to get a game. Although regularly seen playing on full tilt poker at the highest stakes nowadays, the majority of games Dwan is involved in are prescheduled. At this point in time, Dwan could’nt just enter regular cash games and expect everyone to play him.

What Does the “Durrrr” in Tom “Durrrr” Dwan Stand For?

Choosing a nickname with the intentional aim of annoying opposition, the “Durrrr” in Thomas “Durrrr” Dwan’s name doesn’t actually stand for anything. In a recent interview he stated that when he first began playing poker he wanted to choose an online poker alias that would annoy opposition when they were beat. The alias “Durrrr” stuck with Dwan throughout his success and has quickly become a hit – and to the animosity of dyslexic internet searcher and poker news editors, the “Durrrr” sobriquet doesn’t look like changing. In a recent interview, Tom “Durrrr” Dwan told reporters recently “I never really worried if I was good at it; I just thought everyone else was bad and it seemed like an easy way to make money.”

Dwan’s Status Gets a Boost

With many up and coming poker professionals criticised before really hitting the big stage, Dwan Proved he wasn’t just a lucky player about to hit the rails. In a high stakes game that impressed poker aficionados and fellow professionals alike in a game against Patrik Antonius, Durrrr called down an Antonius bluff $100,000 on the river with third pair. Durrrr commented “In that hand I had a timing tell on Patrik Antonius, but most of the time it comes down to putting your opponent on a range of hands and deciding what they would do with that range a percentage of the time. Against a really good play I can never be 100%, but if I am 75% sure I am always going to make the call.”

Indeed, as well as, Dwan had also previously entered the EPT in England as a student poker player, finishing 12th place and earning $12,300 in the £3000 No Limit Holdem game.

Turning 21: Tom Dwan Enters the Live US Tournaments

Since turning 21 (legal age to play poker in US), Thom “Durrrr” Dwan decided to diversify from online poker and dip his toes in the live tournament circuits – where historically many pros such as Phil Hellmuth have made big names for themselves – and Dwan was no different. At 21 Thomas “Durrrr” Dwan entered the WPT in 2007, coming 4th in the final event of $9700 No Limit Holdem and taking home $324,244. Before this though, Tom “Durrrr” Dwan had also finished 4th place at the WPT Foxwoods event in No Limit Holdem and 2nd place at the Aussie Millions Poker Championship Pot Limit Omaha (he decided to learn Omaha too and started pawning tables pretty quickly). Durrrr also received a 2nd place finish at the WPT Borgata Winter Open in No Limit Holdem.

“Durrrr’s” Million Dollar Challenge

In January 2009, Tom “Durrrr” Dwan shocked the poker circuit and media by after announcing his Million Dollar Challenge. This involved Dwan offering any internet poker player (excluding Phil Galfond) in the world $1 million if they could beat him in over 50k hands 4-tabling 200/400 or higher No Limit Holdem or Pot Limit Omaha. If his opponent in the Million Dollar Challenge won, Thomas “Durrr” Dwan gave them $500,000 plus one million dollars. If he won, he’d get $500,000 from the player.

“I’m making this heads-up challenge to the world. Anyone can accept. Four tables, minimum of $200/$400, and I’ll put up $1.5 million to their $500,000. We play 50,000 hands minimum and if they end up a dollar after rake they keep the side money or whatever. So basically, if you and I played and you won a dollar, you would get my $1.5 million and if I won a dollar I would win your $500,000.

“So I’m giving a million dollars free if anyone thinks they can do it.”
